About Spotwatts and our prices

Spotwatts shows day-ahead electricity prices for Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia: the price right now, today and tomorrow, the cheapest hours and the price history of every price area.

The site is free and independent. It does not sell electricity, and every price on it is calculated automatically from public data, as described below.

Why your bill is higher than this price

The spot price is the price of the energy only. Your bill also includes the grid fee, electricity tax or other levies, the supplier's mark-up or monthly fee, and VAT on all of these. A fixed-price contract does not follow the spot price at all. In Norway, strømstøtte (the state electricity subsidy) or Norgespris changes what households pay: compare the two in the Norgespris calculator.

VAT

Prices are shown with VAT at each country's standard rate on electricity; on the price pages you can switch VAT off. Negative prices get VAT in the same way and stay negative.

Country VAT
Norway 25%
Denmark 25%
Sweden 25%
Finland 25.5%
Estonia 24%
Lithuania 21%
Latvia 21%

In NO4, households in Nordland, Troms and Finnmark pay no VAT on electricity; the part of Trøndelag in NO4 pays 25% VAT.

Where the prices come from

The prices come from the ENTSO-E Transparency Platform, which publishes the results of the European day-ahead auction (SDAC). These are the same area prices that Nord Pool shows. Spotwatts is not affiliated with ENTSO-E or Nord Pool.

If ENTSO-E is late, we use another open source with the same auction results; each day's page names its source. For Denmark that is Energi Data Service (Energinet), published under the CC BY 4.0 licence; we convert its prices to øre per kWh and add VAT.

Prices in Norwegian, Danish and Swedish kroner are converted from euros at the reference rate of the European Central Bank (ECB).

Developers can use the same prices for free through our open JSON API.

How we calculate

The auction sets a price for every 15 minutes of the next day in each price area. Prices are published in euros per megawatt-hour (EUR/MWh); we show them per kilowatt-hour in each country's unit: c/kWh, øre/kWh, öre/kWh.

Conversion: EUR/MWh × exchange rate ÷ 10 = øre or öre per kWh, and EUR/MWh ÷ 10 = cents per kWh. For example, 85 EUR/MWh at 11.50 kroner per euro is 97.75 øre/kWh, or 8.5 c/kWh in the euro countries, both without VAT.

Exchange rate: we use the ECB rate known at the auction. Each page with prices in kroner shows the date of its rate.

The hourly price is the average of the hour's four 15-minute prices.

When prices are updated

The auction closes at 12:00 Central European time, and its results come out around 12:45–13:00 (13:45–14:00 in Finland and the Baltic states). We check for them every five minutes until every price area has tomorrow's prices, and compare them with a second source the same afternoon. Until they are published, the pages say so instead of showing old prices.

Please note

The prices on Spotwatts are for information only. We calculate them carefully, but errors and delays can happen, and the official prices are the auction results. Spotwatts gives no financial advice and accepts no liability for decisions based on these prices.
